What Is Re-imaging?

Photo re-imaging is the process of taking an image from, or adding it to another image within a photograph. While this sounds simple, the actual process can be quite involved and when done well, requires an artistic familiarity with structure, light, shadow, landscape and often times anatomy, as well.

Re-imaging can be something as simple as removing the leash from the photo of a dog:

To adding an ear to this unfortunate victim of mistaken identity (her pack thought she was a rabbit when she popped her head up out of a rabbit hole and acted accordingly):

Re-imaging includes color correction and improvement in clarity, too.

It can be as complicated as removing the family from the photo taken at the company picnic and adding it into the background from the Hawaiian vacation where Jimmy had his eyes closed in every picture.

The difference between re-imaging and restoration is not only the amount of time and work involved but the amount of imagination required. When I remove your ex-spouse from a picture, to leave just you standing in front of that waterfall, I have to imagine and then create what would be in his place (Fabio? We can do that!). But if you are putting this picture on your next Christmas card, you’ll want something a bit more natural, and we can help you there as well. Restoration is more like “airbrushing” what you already have, rather than creating something new.

For example instead of replacing little Jimmy in that Hawaiian vacation photo we simply open his eyes. And if sister Becky would like her acne removed, Mom wishes her hair wasn’t sticking up in the back like Lil’ Rascals’ Alfalfa, or Dad wants to fill in that distinct sunscreen handprint the kids left in the middle of his chest when he fell asleep on the beach, restoration is what you need. This still requires a bit of artistry but in general most restoration is less time intensive.
