Photo Restoration Services

The normal wear and tear of everyday life can age photos to a point where they need a touch up; this is where restoration comes into play. Restoration is the process of restoring a photo to its original state. While we might “airbrush” some undesirable portions of a photo, in essence we are restoring what was originally there.

For example a friend putting together a family album gave me the picture below. Plainly visible are the water stains, flaking, rips and the yellow discoloration that commonly occurs with aging photos. Its condition made it difficult to protect from further damage and of lower quality than the rest of the photos she had.

Before restoration, this priceless picture is damaged

After the restoration we reprinted the photo, making it a suitable, durable addition to the family album.

Restoration returns the photographic image to a family treasure

Sometimes other tragedies befall our photos. I had a client bring me a photo of his parents that had been ripped apart when they divorced. They didn’t like each other anymore but he cherished his memories and wanted me to try to restore the photo.

This kind of restoration can take a very long time. Even though I was not creating anything new, trying to fit anatomy back together required a very precise ability to blend what was left while maintaining the structure of what had been. He was very pleased with the results.

The difference between restoration and re-imaging is simple. Restoration is about maintaining the basic elements of the original photos, and re-imaging is about changing the basic elements and creating something different in their place. An example of re-imaging is below.

Before:

Re-imaging takes a favorite picture, and removes the distracting elements

After:

After re-imaging, the picture is... picture perfect.

Both processes require time, patience, knowledge of structure light and shadow, not to mention a bit of creativity.
